Philosophy

I retired from clinical practice in 2018, and have focus my career on research and education.  The time gained from no longer going to the operating room and seeing patients have been used to expand my roles as a teacher and a clinical researcher.

Teaching is a major focus, and I have coordinated and written a curriculum for instruction in the Department of Orthopedics Arthroscopy Lab for the last 13 years.  We now occupy considerable space in the Surgical Simulation Suite of the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.  Increased laboratory time should improve the level of knowledge, and enhance the efficiency and speed of our trainees with respect to arthroscopic anatomy, and acquisition of the psychomotor skills required for surgical arthroscopy.  Through a generous philanthropic gift, we were able to purchase a virtual reality arthroscopic surgery simulator.  We have now trained nine years of resident classes on the simulator, and continue to upgrade the system’s hardware and software.  I teach an upper level fourth year medical school course – Anat 801 Clinical Musculoskeletal Anatomy in the spring of each academic calendar.

My research interests in the basic sciences relate to the biomechanics of the shoulder and the knee, with the most recent projects investigating the relationship of meniscus root tears to clinical presentation and long term prognosis.  I continue to participate in the Department’s largest clinical trial investigating the relationship of a surgical chondroplasty to clinical outcome, with patients now being followed at ten years.  I am active in pursuing clinical questions that can be answered by statistical review of our practice’s  databases and patient reported outcomes measures, or by performing metaanalysis on the literature regarding sports related conditions.  I serve on a committee that supervises and reviews the research projects of our Department’s Orthopedic Residents and Fellows in training.  I have also advised PhD candidates seeking advanced degrees in the Departments of Exercise Science, biology, and Anthropology.

I am very fulfilled by participating in the above – the three pillars of a physician/scientist’s activity – clinical medicine, teaching, and research.
