Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation physicians, or physiatrists, are medical doctors who have completed specialized training in the medical specialty of physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R). These nerve, muscle and bone experts treat a wide variety of injuries or illnesses that impact how you move.

The focus of rehabilitation medicine is the development of a comprehensive program for putting the pieces of a person’s life back together after injury or disease. Different conditions affect each person differently, and we work to tailor a program that will help restore strength and mobility and help resume a regular range of motion and day-to-day activities.

Conditions commonly treated by physiatrists include neck and back pain, herniated disc, sports injuries, industrial and work injuries, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, head traumas (concussion/brain injury/stroke), spinal cord injuries, osteoarthritis, myofascial pain and chronic pain management. Common procedures used in rehabilitation include EMG studies, botox injections (after stroke, head trauma, spinal cord injury and cervical dystonia) and prolotherapy, also known as regenerative injection therapy.
