Matthew DiPaola, MD, shoulder & elbow surgery specialist for UBMD Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine has been awarded the 2021 Charles S. Neer Award by the American Shoulder & Elbow Surgeons (ASES). The award will be presented during the Virtual ASES Specialty Day on Saturday, February 27, 2021.
DiPaola received the award in the Basic Science category for his manuscript An In Vitro Analysis of Antibiotic Cement Combinations Against Cutibacterium Acnes.
“We are honored and humbled that the American Shoulder & Elbow Society chose to recognize our work for the Charles Neer Award in Basic Science this year,” said DiPaola. “We have a tremendously talented and dedicated team of clinician scientists here at UB devoted to improving the lives of our patients and community and I am proud to be a part of this team. We are excited to continue pursuing further research and continue to improve the results of this difficult problem.”
DiPaola was the lead investigator on this project and was backed by colleagues Thomas Duquin, MD, a shoulder joint replacement & reconstruction specialist and Leslie Bisson, MD, a sports medicine & knee & shoulder arthroscopy specialist. Additionally, Amrit Vinod, MD, orthopaedic resident, John Crane, MD, PhD, Professor of Medicine, Lin Feng, Clinical Research Coordinator and Sonja Pavelsen, MD, all from the University at Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences backed this project.
“Shoulder replacement is a viable and often life-changing operation for the treatment of shoulder arthritis,” said DiPaola. “Unfortunately, on rare occasions, patients with shoulder replacements can develop infections of the joint. While infected joint replacements are always a challenge to treat, shoulder replacements in particular are often caused by different bacteria in other parts of the body.”
According to ASES, the Charles S. Neer Award was established in honor of Charles S. Neer, who was a founding member and first president of the association. It was created to provide recognition for outstanding clinical investigation contributing to the understanding, care or prevention of injuries to the shoulder and elbow. The award was expanded to include both clinical and research categories.
Dr. DiPaola said that this research describes some practical and immediately applicable findings that will help surgeons better tailor antibiotics to best fight the infections that occur specifically in the shoulder.
