Clinical Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics, University at Buffalo
As a member of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, I have always tried to maintain a healthy balance between my clinical practice, my educational duties, and my research endeavors. By incorporating these three facets into my professional life I believe that I am able to provide the highest quality care to my patients while giving back to the community as a whole through both teaching and scientific research.
I subspecialize in hip and knee arthroplasty including complex deformity and revision cases. Hip and knee replacements are some of the most successful procedures in all of medicine today. It is very gratifying to me to be able to restore function and provide pain free mobility to patients who have been afflicted with debilitating arthritis, congenital deformity or post-traumatic joint problems. I have been fortunate to be at the forefront of the development and use of computer navigation for knee replacement. I have also been a leader in the development of less-invasive hip replacement techniques that have allowed patients to go through the surgery process with much less pain and a more rapid recovery.

"Had my hip replaced by Dr. Philips. Within two weeks I was walking with out any assistance and no issues since then. I am now able to be active every day at 75. Thanks to Dr. Phillips!"
"Dr. Phillips and his assistants and staff are the greatest!"
"I asked to have both hips X-rayed to see if they were adding to my problem of needing to use two canes for walking. Dr. Phillips' [physician assistant] Angelina Ryan saw me and gave me good news that there is no need for surgery. Everything was explained well and she showed me the X-rays. She then suggested further follow up things I needed to do. I know I am receiving the best medical advice and care when my appointment is with her."
"Excellent experience from receptionist to physician assistant, and Dr. Phillips was excellent."
Dr. Phillips performed a total hip replacement on my left hip [several years ago] and just performed another hip replacement on my right hip. This time around I was a little nervous, but Dr. Phillips’ calm demeanor made me feel confident about the surgery. I couldn’t be happier! The staff has been very helpful throughout the process. Thank you!!
In 2014, Dr. Matthew Phillips operated on me for a total left hip replacement. It was a date that changed my life for the better. Not only has my pain completely gone away, I am able to sleep through the night without waking up repeatedly in pain. Watching my family’s, friends’, and co-workers’ reactions seeing me walk again as a normal human being and not like Quasimodo really confirmed how much Dr. Phillips improved the quality of my life. I am forever grateful to him and his excellent staff. I would highly recommend this wonderful doctor to give you the most professional treatment. He also used a procedure that was less invasive so that your recovery time is so much shorter. Thank you, Dr. Phillips. You really do make a difference in people’s lives.
