UBMD Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine physicians Michael S. Freitas, MD, MSPT, and Leslie J. Bisson, MD, have been selected to receive 2025 Excellence in Health Care awards. The annual awards presented by Buffalo Business First, are intended to honor high-achieving and hard-working professionals in the Western New York health care industry.

Twenty-three health care professionals were selected as 2025 honorees. These physicians, nurses, administrators, board members, researchers and educators — whose work has improved the way the health system operates in our region’s hospitals, labs, clinics, nonprofits and health facilities — will be honored in front of their peers and community leaders at the Excellence in Health Care Awards Dinner on June 5.

Dr. Freitas, a board-certified, fellowship-trained Primary Care Sports Medicine and UB Concussion Management and Research Center physician, also serves as the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship Director and the Medical Director of the University at Buffalo Athletic Training Program. Additionally, Dr. Freitas is a team physician for the Buffalo Sabres, Rochester Americans, University at Buffalo Bulls and Daemen University Wildcats, and he serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics, Family Medicine, and Exercise and Nutrition Sciences at the Jacobs School Of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo.

Dr. Bisson is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon, Knee & Shoulder Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine physician, and the Clinical Research Department Chair. Nationally recognized for his academic research, medical advancements and work to deliver CPR/AED training in underserved communities, he also serves as the Medical Director for the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres. As the Associate Dean for Clinical Transformation and the June A. and Eugene R. Mindell, MD Professor and Chair of the Department of Orthopaedics at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo, Dr. Bisson is passionate about serving the local community and advancing the department’s mission of compassionate care, innovative research and collaborative education.
