The Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo held its 2025 Faculty and Staff Recognition Awards event on May 20, celebrating outstanding service, teaching, scientific achievements and other efforts of its faculty and staff. As part of the evening’s proceedings, UBMD Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine physician William M. Wind, Jr., MD, FAAOS, was honored with an Excellence in Mentoring Award for Clinical Work, and orthopaedic surgery resident Ellen E. Lutnick, MD, received an award for Excellence in Promoting Inclusion and Cultural Diversity.
In addition to his role practicing Sports Medicine and Knee & Shoulder Arthroscopy at UBMD Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine, Dr. Wind serves as a Clinical Associate Professor of Orthopaedics at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. The inaugural Excellence in Mentoring Awards for Clinical Work were intended to recognize faculty who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to mentoring of students, trainees and faculty in clinical work in medicine and biomedical sciences. Dr. Wind was honored for being reliable, compassionate and understanding while fostering trainee growth, and for being patient and approachable while cultivating optimal learning spaces for clinical and professional advancement. The recognition also reflected his exceptional dedication to mentee success and to creating an inclusive environment in research development.
The Excellence for Promoting Inclusion and Cultural Diversity Awards acknowledged individuals whose actions, example and efforts contribute to a respectful and supportive environment at the University and in Western New York. Dr. Lutnick founded the local chapter of the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society and has always advocated for representation in medicine. As an orthopaedic surgery resident, she is dedicated to improving access and fostering connections between leaders and students who are interested in orthopaedic surgery.
