UBMD Ortho’s Dr. Michael Freitas attended the Mid-American Conference, NCAA Mental Health Summit on February 16, 2016 in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Freitas attended with other representatives from the UB Department of Athletics. Currently they are working on creating standards and guidelines to establish best practices within the entire NCAA for supporting the mental health of collegiate athletes.
A group of team physicians, administrators, sports psychologists, athletics trainers, learning specialists, student athletes and others from the Mid American Conference met with NCAA chief medical officer and administrators. Dr. Freitas found this was very successful in laying the groundwork for upcoming best practice statement which will soon be published.
