When playing and exercising, do it right.

Accidents can always happen. But taking the proper steps to safety is always easier than dealing with the after effects of an injury that could have been prevented.

Here are some tips to safely engaging in exercise and physical activities:

  • Always wear appropriate protective gear during sports and recreational activities – including the right footwear to avoid slip and trips that can cause head injuries
  • Wear approved helmets for sports to prevent serious injury to the skull or brain – especially contact sports such as hockey, football and lacrosse
  • In addition to helmets, don’t forget mouth guards, headbands and other straps which have proven to be effective in concussion prevention
  • Ensure a proper fit on all gear. One size does not fit all when it comes to this important gear
  • When engaged in play, avoid the head as a point of contact
  • Play and tackle in a safe and proper technique. Coach for safety and fun play – not injury
  • Strength training and exercises can make the body more resistant to injury – including the shoulders and neck to help absorb the shock of a blow
  • Learn more and participate in education programs about concussion and associated risks
  • Ensure everyone – yourself, teammates and coaches – follow the rules during play, as well as post injury concussion protocol
  • Be responsible for yourself. Do not play if you experience concussion symptoms
  • Report concussion-like symptoms to a parent, a coach, a trainer or doctor
  • Do not return to play or activity until you receive proper clearance from a trained professional
